Bones are predominantly made up of calcium, a critical mineral for normal body processes; the skeleton is the storehouse for calcium. Our bones are constantly changing with a balance between accumulation and removal of calcium as needed by the body. Strong bones reflect how well this balance is achieved. Healthy bones are essential at all ages. Weak bones predispose to deformities and fractures, especially with old age. Our maximum bone size and strength or peak bone mass is determined by our genes, dietary calcium, exercise, and the presence or absence of other illnesses. The peak bone mass is usually achieved before 25 years of age; stronger the bones in childhood, better will be the peak bone strength. As one grows older, there is only limited capacity to improve our bone strength as loss of bone mass happens faster than deposition.
In this panel discussion, we will be focusing on the common factors that control bone health in children, risk factors for weak bones, and how to address them, and things we can do in our daily routine, diet, and lifestyle to provide children with stronger bones so that they can grow up to become adults with healthier bones.
FAQ’s
We will also address some FAQs that parents have –
1. Doc – my child is 1 year old and not walking yet. Should I give any supplements?
2. I feel my 18-month-old boy’s legs are not straight – they appear to be bent. Is this a concern?
3. Toe-walking / walking with legs wide apart / flat feet- is it a ‘bony’ problem?
4. Doc- should I do a Vitamin D test for my 5-year-old? She complains of leg pains in the evenings daily.
5. My teenager is into active sports. Should he be taking any nutritional supplements for his bones?
The panel discussion will focus on how our lifestyle & environment has made it easier to choose junk foods, the health consequences of being overweight & obesity and what are the changes we can make such as choosing healthy foods over junk foods and other lifestyle changes. We will also address practical tips to improve Childhood Nutrition and prevent as well as manage obesity and associated health hazards such as modifying our behaviour, being role models and reaching out to experts when we need help.
Mental Health of a child refers to the overall well-being and development of a child with respect to its emotional, behavioural, social and cognitive areas. Since children undergo different milestones, their mental health is also very much different from an adult’s. Hence, it is imperative to understand their mental needs, identify the red flags, understand what causes them to deviate from a positive mental health and provide them the coping skills to ensure they thrive.
Sometimes, its not the child that needs to change, but the environment!
And this workshop will help understand these concepts!

Childhood Injuries are predictable and preventable!
Every day around the world the lives of more than 2000 families are torn apart by the loss of a child to an unintentional injury or so-called “accident” that could have been prevented and treated early by trained personnel. The grief that these families suffer – mothers, fathers, siblings, grandparents, and friends – is immeasurable and often impacts entire communities. Such tragedy can change lives irrevocably.
These accidents can be prevented at the primary level or the fatality can be reduced by detecting it early and correcting it fast.
In this panel discussion, we will focus on addressing important aspects of child safety such as Types of injuries, Primary prevention of injury, and Early detection of injuries
Making our children take a break from gadgets has become a monstrous reality. What was used as a distraction has become a permanent fixture. This in turn has started affecting a child’s physical and mental health, lowered attention span, reduced creativity and even hampered their problem solving skills.
In addition, the growing threats like cyber bullying, invasion of privacy are all posing a threat.
Anything in limits is good, but when the balance tips, becomes toxic!
This discussion aims at understanding this fine balance!
