Captivating Journey into Animation At ‘The Mill’ – Technicolor Creative Studios

Students from Years 8 and 9 recently enjoyed an extraordinary visit to 'The Mill's', Technicolor Creative Studios to gain first-hand insights into the world of visual effects and animation. The dedicated staff at The Mill graciously devoted their time to conduct engaging interactive sessions, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the studio's involvement in diverse projects, ranging from short ads and movie production to animation and video games.

The showcase left our students captivated as they witnessed the behind-the-scenes magic of their favorite movies, animations, and beloved computer games being brought to life within the studio. A highlight of the visit was the floor walk, where industry experts meticulously briefed the students on every aspect of creating an animated movie. The students were particularly astounded to discover the immense effort and creativity invested in producing even a brief 5-second advertisement.

This experience proved invaluable for those students aspiring to pursue careers in design, offering them a firsthand glimpse into the dynamic and innovative industry they aspire to be a part of. The Mill's team served as an inspiration, generously sharing their own experiences, providing valuable career advice, and patiently addressing numerous questions posed by our enthusiastic students.

Indeed, this visit provided an incredible industry experience, leaving a lasting impact on our students and fostering their passion for the fascinating world of visual effects and animation.

Student Reflections

I think the field trip was great and it interested me. The work that they do was very interesting for me because I play games a lot and I was not aware of all the work that they do for animation and it seems like a fun career for me atleast. They said for a small ad they put weeks of work and they make 50 ads a month. Also, I found the workspace very nice.

Yesterday, we went to Technicolor Games, a company that works in visual design and graphics for games, movies and trailers. Usually this isn't my field of interest but this visit showed me how much time and effort it takes behind every single second of what we watch in day-to-day life. The staff over there gave us thorough and simple explanations about what each department did to make their projects a success. Overall, it was an informative and interactive trip.

On 16th January, grades 8 and 9 went to Technicolour Animation Studio for a field trip. The technicolour team had presented a presentation on their different departments, the projects they've worked on and the process of editing. We learnt that the company owns various studios like MPC(movies), The Mill(advertisements), Mikros(animations) etc. We were then segregated into two groups and were guided around the building. We went to various departments where certain staff members explained and helped us get a better understanding of their roles. My favourite part was the effects team- I like that their role is to add effects to enhance and emphasise the scenes. Overall, this experience was very enlightening, I'm drawn to this topic and would love to go for more future events.

I found the field trip very interesting and informative, since I never really thought of how much work goes into making even a 10 second ad. It was really cool to see the way they animate things and how they add special effects to ads and movies. It was also quite helpful to me since I would like to pursue a career in design, and getting to see and experience one of the job choices that requires design was definitely great. I hope in the future we can have more in depth sessions and workshops about this for people who are interested. So overall I had a great time and really enjoyed this experience.

This fieldtrip was unexpectedly fun and interesting. They taught many things about animation like how much time they take for creating an ad. They showed every piece of their work and the apps they use to create the content. They even showed us the examples of their work. It was a fun trip overall.

Shree

I found the tour to be extremely interesting and educational because they showed us footage of their work and the films and television shows they had been involved in. They gave us a brief tour of the workspace, led us to see some of their colleagues to demonstrate the step-by-step process, and showed us a video on adding visual effects or creating the final character, among other things. It was a really enjoyable experience. It was really entertaining and intriguing for me.
